The study investigates the transport and retention of benzoporphyrin derivative (BPD) photosensitizers in cancer cells, focusing on the role of various ATP-binding cassette (ABC) transporters. The team studied PDT resistance mechanisms by activating BPD in cancer cell lines and subsequently determining the cell viabilities. The lipidation of BPD is shown to decrease its efflux from cells and increase PDT effectiveness.
