#TailoredLaser CORE TECHNOLOGIES

Multimode lasers

Multimode laser diodes use wide emitters to achieve high output power. Their optimized design allows for exceptional performance in optical pumping. The beam shape can be customized with laser design and micro-optics, and the power can be increased by combining multiple lasers into one package.

Example products

Wavelength-stabilized multimode lasers

Wavelength-stabilized multimode laser diodes use an integrated grating to maintain stable operation. This allows the laser to operate in a single longitudinal mode with minimal wavelength shifts, even as temperature changes.

Example products

Laser arrays

Laser bars or arrays contain multiple emitters and deliver high output power with uniformity across the array. For even greater power, stacks of laser bars can be used, with the option of combining different wavelengths. Emitters in arrays can also be tailored to be individually addressable (IAB) with custom emitter number and spacing.

Example products

Tapered lasers

Tapered amplifiers and tapered lasers work as a middle ground between single-mode and multimode-lasers. The output power of several watts is achieved with a much better beam quality than what is available from multimode diodes, enabling efficient single-mode fiber coupling. Tapered amplifiers amplify the output power of a seed laser, while maintaining the spectral linewidth and sidemode suppression ratio of the seed laser.

Example products

Single-mode lasers

Single-mode lasers utilize an optimized waveguide structure to ensure single transverse mode operation. The laser can be collimated to a diffraction limited beam and coupled to single mode fiber with high efficiency.

Example products

Single-frequency lasers

DBR and DFB lasers use an internal grating for single longitudinal mode operation, offering narrow linewidth and low phase noise. This integration ensures robustness against external disturbances, a compact form factor, and scalability for high-volume production. These lasers can be made even in non-standard wavelengths and are available in standard and custom packaging including the options for integrated optical isolators and fiber coupling.

Example products

Gain chips

Gain chips feature a low-reflectivity output facet that prevents lasing within the semiconductor itself. Instead, lasing occurs through feedback from an external cavity, allowing wide wavelength tuning and narrow linewidth operation. These chips can be integrated into photonic circuits with tailored beam shapes and positions.

Example products

VCSELs

Vertical cavity surface emitting lasers (VCSEL) emit light perpendicularly from the wafer surface. They offer a compact design with high beam quality, low beam divergence, single-frequency operation, and high-frequency modulation. Output power can be increased by using large VCSEL arrays with customizable spacing.

Example products

VECSELs

Vertical External Cavity Surface Emitting Lasers (VECSELs) combine a semiconductor gain medium with an external cavity. The combination enables high output power, broad wavelength tunability, narrow linewidth and high beam quality.

Example products

Fiber lasers

Fiber lasers use optical fibers as the gain medium, allowing high power output with excellent beam quality and efficiency. The fiber infrastructure makes these lasers alignment in-sensitive and highly stable against external disturbances.

Example products

DPSSLs

Diode-Pumped Solid-State Lasers (DPSSL) are powered by laser diodes that pump a solid-state gain medium, such as a crystal. They offer high efficiency and excellent beam quality, making them suitable for precision applications requiring stable and high-powered output.

#TailoredLaser CASE 1: CUSTOM PACKAGING

What was the #TailoredLaser?

The customer requested a 690 nm laser with custom packaging to enable integration of the laser directly on an existing printed circuit board (PCB). This would simplify their implementation process and ensure compatibility with their existing hardware.

How did the development go on?

Modulight team manufactured the laser chips and designed custom packaging for the laser. The package considerations included a multi-layer AlN submount for low inductance. The package had specified bottom contacts to enable soldering to PCB. The package and process was designed for volume manufacturing with low cost, and utilizing automated equipment.

What was the outcome of the project?

The project progressed successfully through its key stages. Initially, Modulight delivered an evaluation batch that was fully aligned with the customer’s specifications, allowing the client to assess the product’s performance in their environment. Following positive feedback, the project advanced to the production phase, starting the full-scale manufacturing.

#Tailoredlaser CASE 2: 40-CHANNEL IAB AT 650nm

What was the #TailoredLaser?

Customer reached out to us with highly specific laser array for a digital printing application, 40 channel individually addressable laser array (IAB) at 65X nm wavelength range. In other words, they needed a laser array with 40 identically operating channels with pitch less than 100 µm. All channels can be driven independently from others.

How did the development go on?

The Modulight team engaged with the customer to truly understand the performance and usage requirements of the laser. For instance, the uniform operation between channels as well as the required output power were key factors. Once this was clear, the team designed a several  epitaxial structures and determined the most suitable one. We then moved to device design, process development, and characterization (LIV, life tests, and output power determination).  Upon delivery, we supported the customer with data analysis and provided process control data, such as SEM images of the ridge-waveguide components.

What was the outcome of the project?

Modulight delivered the agreed-upon laser arrays with varying channel number designs. As a result, Modulight was officially qualified as a supplier for the customer. This opened up further discussions about future products and deeper integration, including additional packaging and optics for the product. When we reported our capabilities in IAB manufacturing in conference papers, we were reached by multiple other customers for manufacturing IAB arrays for them with other wavelengths besides 65x nm.
