ROS mediated oxidation is an effective method for triggering cargo release from liposomes for time- and site specific drug delivery. In this study, the role of lipid oxidation was studied in the release of macromolecules from phthalocyanine-loaded liposomes after irradiation with 630 nm laser light. ML8500 was used for calcein release from liposomes in both normoxic and hypoxic conditions. Shorter illumination time (1-2 minutes) led to the formation of hydroperoxides and vic-alcohols predominantly. Longer 9-minute irradiation resulted already in aldehydes generation.
