Photoactivatable liposomes were investigated for their potential to deliver antibiotics (minocycline) as antimicrobial therapy against antibiotic resistant bacterial strains. The liposomal delivery platform co-encapsulated minocycline with light-sensitive compound benzoporphyrin derivative (BPD) to enable simultaneous intracellular delivery at synergistic ratios. Synergistic antibacterial effect was shown against when irradiated with sub-lethal light dose using ML6600 laser. This complimentary therapeutic strategy can help with shortage of new antibiotics and growing antibiotic resistance.
