Tumor selectivity of near-infrared photoimmunotherapy (NIR-PIT) is traditionally based on the binding of monoclonal antibody to its target and bringing the IR700 photoabsorber close to the cell membrane for light activation. In this study, IL15 was conjugated with IR700 to enable lower cost and smaller size for better tumor penetration and coverage. When activated with Modulight’s ML7710 laser, it induced significant decrease in cell viability in vitro and suppression of tumor growth and stimulation of immune response in vivo, showing feasibility of cytokine-based NIR-PIT.
