Gold nanorods were studied as an improved, safer targeted method for laser interstitial thermal therapy (LITT) of gliomas. Nanorods were surface-functionalized with Fn14 antibody and polyethylene glycol to achieve better selectivity and low adhesivity to extracellular matrix. Heating receptor-targeted nanorods with red light (ML6600) raised temperature of tissue-mimicking phantoms significantly and rapidly and enhanced photothermal killing in GBM cells compared to non-targeted gold nanorods.
