Modulight becomes exclusive supplier for BAUSCH + LOMB
Modulight's 18th birthday celebrations BRIDGEWATER, N.J., December 04, 2018 – Bausch + Lomb, a leading global eye health company, and Modulight, Inc., a designer and manufacturer of lasers and optics for personalized medicine, announced the companies have entered into an exclusive agreement to collaborate and develop a new photodynamic laser specifically designed for use with Bausch + Lomb’s VISUDYNE® (verteporfin for injection) therapy.

“Photodynamic therapy continues to be an important option for eye care professionals who treat choroidal neovascularization in patients who suffer from persistent disease activity, but the availability of lasers capable of delivering this type of treatment in the industry has been limited,” said Tracy Valorie, vice president and general manager, Pharmaceuticals and Surgical, Bausch + Lomb. “We have entered this agreement with Modulight, an industry expert in developing medical laser technology, to provide customers a new laser system that is specifically designed for VISUDYNE and ultimately will allow more eligible patients to receive the treatment they need.”

“Modulight works closely with healthcare companies to customize its broad portfolio of laser technology solutions to specifically address their needs,” said Seppo Orsila, executive chairman, Modulight. “Bausch + Lomb has identified a significant need in the ophthalmic industry and we believe this a great opportunity to develop a state-of-the-art photodynamic laser to allow customers to continue to provide this type of therapy for their patients. We look forward to a strong promising collaboration."

Lasers in DNA sequencing
Medical device prototyping, production and clinical trials DNA sequencing is the process of determining the order of nucleotides in DNA. It includes any method or technology that is used to determine the order of the four bases: adenine, guanine, cytosine, and thymine. Both laser and LED light can be used in sequencing systems. Maximizing signal-to-noise ratio is important, and lasers provide this and many more advantages, like focusing (accuracy), coherence, and precise bandwidth.

Incorporating nucleotides are conjugated to fluorophores that emit specific colors for every nucleotide when exciting with laser. The excitation peaks of the fluorophores determine what laser wavelengths are needed; usual ones are 405 nm, 450 nm, 488 nm, 520 nm, 532 nm, 640 nm, 650 nm, 660 nm, 780 nm and 790 nm. Bases are then identified by the emission wavelength and signal intensity.

Today there are many full-genome sequencing providers and the prices of the services have dropped significantly during the last ten years. Modulight provides laser illumination light sources and sub-systems suitable for DNA sequencing and gene mapping. See examples of our suitable products here.

Beneath the surface: a day in the life of a laser engineer – mass production of high-end devices
Medical device prototyping, production and clinical trials Quite often we meet customers that need a laser product that doesn't exist yet. It might be something quite unusual, or they might just need a little tweak to our existing product. Modulight develops and manufactures lasers for mass production. Some of our products are made in millions of units. Our factory is ISO9001, 14001 and 13485 audited – this paves the way for long term supply of advanced devices.

Welcome to a virtual tour in Modulight laser processing facilities where our engineers walk you through basic steps in developing and processing diode lasers. Please don't hesitate to contact us when you need help from our diode laser professionals!
