Modulight Spotlights: LASER-SHARP RESEARCH – July 2026

The Research Highlight of the Month goes to Eija Ilvesroiha and Professor Timo Laaksonen’s Laboratory of Pharmaceutical Nanotechnology at the University of Helsinki. Their new study investigated the release mechanisms of the chemotherapy drug paclitaxel from light-activated liposomes. These lipid-based carriers have the potential to deliver drugs to target tissues while reducing non-specific toxicity and improving the solubility of lipophilic drugs.
The ML8500 biomedical illumination system was used to induce either photothermal or photo-oxidative release using indocyanine green and verteporfin as photoactive components incorporated into the liposomes. The study found that paclitaxel remained entrapped within micelles formed by oxidized lipids, whereas the hydrophilic model compound calcein was successfully released from verteporfin-containing liposomes.

Modulight is very happy to be supporting this research. We would like to deliver our warmest congratulations to the research team!

About Modulight’s LASER-SHARP RESEARCH concept:

Laser-Sharp Research is a concept where our scientific board highlights cutting-edge scientific research articles from our customers. Important selection criteria are that Modulight and laser product are mentioned in the publication, the impact and relevance of the results, clinical translatability, as well as scientific quality of the journal. The nominated research groups will be rewarded to encourage the great work done.
