Modulight Spotlights: LASER-SHARP RESEARCH – May 2026

The research spotlight goes this month to Nimit Shah and the team from Dr. Girgis Obaid’s Lab Molecular Imaging and Optical Nanotherapeutics at University of Texas, Dallas. They developed and evaluated light-activated, verteporfin-containing liposomes for pancreatic cancer. This cancer is notoriously difficult to treat and more effective therapies are urgently needed, as only 1 in 10 patients survive more than 5 years after diagnosis. The team conjugated liposomes with a lipid SM-102, which is clinically used for the delivery of mRNA-based vaccines. This modification was then shown to potentiate immunological cell death of cancer cells by up to 8-fold following light activation with the ML6600 laser, which also resulted in better treatment efficacy.

Modulight is very happy to be supporting this research. We would like to deliver our warmest congratulations to the research team!

About Modulight’s LASER-SHARP RESEARCH concept:

Laser-Sharp Research is a concept where our scientific board highlights cutting-edge scientific research articles from our customers. Important selection criteria are that Modulight and laser product are mentioned in the publication, the impact and relevance of the results, clinical translatability, as well as scientific quality of the journal. The nominated research groups will be rewarded to encourage the great work done.
