The last Laser-Sharp award for the year 2025 goes to Deeksha Sankepalle and the group at Tufts University, USA. The team developed an advanced multi-wavelength photoacoustic imaging system. It integrates a pulsed, tunable laser with an ultrasound acquisition platform to provide functional 3D imaging. The system enables real-time, non-invasive, high-resolution imaging of tumor vasculature by tracking oxygen saturation in the tumor. To demonstrate the platform’s potential for treatment guidance, researchers conducted ML6600 laser–activated photoimmunotherapy and were successfully able to monitor changes in tumor oxygenation throughout treatment.
