Modulight Spotlights: LASER-SHARP RESEARCH – December 2024
This month we are highlighting work by Timothy C. Zhu and the team at University of Pennsylvania, USA. They have investigated the use of photodynamic therapy for mesothelioma, an aggressive cancer that usually occurs in the thin layer of tissue that lines the lungs and is typically caused by asbestos exposure. 24 malignant pleural mesothelioma patients were treated with photodynamic therapy using Photofrin and the ML7710 laser following surgical tumor debulking. The researchers derived oxygenation information inside the pleural cavity by monitoring blood flow using diffuse correlation spectroscopy. Significant variations in oxygen levels both between and within patients were observed, highlighting the potential of real-time feedback monitoring to enhance treatment efficacy and reduce toxicities to surrounding normal tissues.
Modulight is very happy to be supporting this research. We would like to deliver our warmest congratulations to the research team!

About Modulight’s LASER-SHARP RESEARCH concept:
Laser-Sharp Research is a concept where our scientific board highlights cutting-edge scientific research articles from our customers. Important selection criteria are that Modulight and laser product are mentioned in the publication, the impact and relevance of the results, clinical translatability, as well as scientific quality of the journal. The nominated research groups will be rewarded to encourage the great work done.
