Modulight Spotlights: LASER-SHARP RESEARCH – November 2024
The lungs are common site of cancer metastasis, with isolated pulmonary metastases most often affecting patients with colorectal cancer and sarcomas. Surgical metastasectomy is the standard treatment, however, only 1 in 10 patients qualify for surgical resection thus the management remains a significant clinical challenge. To tackle this challenge, K. Ramadan et al. studied photodynamic therapy in an isolated lung perfusion model where the blood is replaced with acellular perfusate, allowing greater light penetration. The feasibility and safety of the procedure was demonstrated using 5-ALA and Chlorin e6 drugs. Modulight’s ML6600 laser was used for delivering high light doses and irradiances to test upper limits of safety. Homogenous illumination of the entire lung was achieved with the help of light delivery planning. Chlorin e6 demonstrated the greatest therapeutic potential, with a minimal uptake in healthy lung tissues.
Modulight is very happy to be supporting this research. We would like to deliver our warmest congratulations to the research team!

About Modulight’s LASER-SHARP RESEARCH concept:
Laser-Sharp Research is a concept where our scientific board highlights cutting-edge scientific research articles from our customers. Important selection criteria are that Modulight and laser product are mentioned in the publication, the impact and relevance of the results, clinical translatability, as well as scientific quality of the journal. The nominated research groups will be rewarded to encourage the great work done.
