Modulight Spotlights: LASER-SHARP RESEARCH – October 2024

This month, we are highlighting new findings published in RSC Materials Advances by Olga Lem, Roosa Kekki and researchers at Pharmaceutical Nanotechnology research group and Tampere University. The study provides key insights into the role of lipid oxidation in cargo release from light-activated liposomes. These spherical lipid vesicles can be controlled by light to provide time- and site-specific drug delivery, for example for cancer treatment. Red light provides a non-invasive, selective, and safe trigger for releasing liposomal cargo. Modulight’s ML8500 in vitro laser was used to study mechanisms of calcein release from liposomes in both normoxic and hypoxic conditions. It was found that formation of pores in the liposomal membrane happened by oxidation of lipids to aldehydes, which was essential for release of larger macromolecules from liposomes.

Modulight is very happy to be supporting this research. We would like to deliver our warmest congratulations to the research team!

About Modulight’s LASER-SHARP RESEARCH concept:

Laser-Sharp Research is a concept where our scientific board highlights cutting-edge scientific research articles from our customers. Important selection criteria are that Modulight and laser product are mentioned in the publication, the impact and relevance of the results, clinical translatability, as well as scientific quality of the journal. The nominated research groups will be rewarded to encourage the great work done.
