Speakers’ biographies

Prof-Gal-Shafirstein  Prof. Gal Shafirstein D.Sc., Roswell Park Cancer Institute

Member/Professor of Oncology
Department of Cell Stress Biology
Dr. Shafirstein is the Director of Clinical Research, photodynamic therapy center at Roswell Park Cancer Institute. His research is focused on developing treatment planning and dosimetry systems for photodynamic therapy of cancerous tumors.

Prof-Keith-CengelProf. Keith A. Cengel, M.D., Ph.D, Univ. of Pennsylvania

Associate Professor of Radiation Oncology
Dr. Cengel is a Clinician-Scientist who specializes in development and application Photodynamic Therapy as a part of multi-modality cancer treatment treatment strategies.

Prof-Brian-PogueProf. Brian Pogue, Dartmouth College

Professor of Engineering • Director, M.S. and Ph.D. Programs
Professor of Physics & Astronomy, Dartmouth College • Professor of Surgery, Geisel School of Medicine
Optics in medicine, biomedical imaging to guide cancer therapy; molecular guided surgery; dose imaging in radiation therapy; Cherenkov light imaging; image guided spectroscopy of cancer; photodynamic therapy; modeling of tumor pathophysiology and contrast.

Prof-Timothy-ZhuProf. Timothy Zhu, Ph. D., Univ. of Pennsylvania

Professor of Radiation Oncology
Dr. Zhu’s research focuses on PDT physics and external beam treatment planning. The first area involves the development of explicit and implicit dosimetry of PDT and light fluence rate calculation. The second area involves development of benchmark database for external beams (electron, photon, and proton) and image co-registrations.

PhD-Tim-BaranTimothy M. Baran, Ph.D., Univ. of Rochester

Instructor – Department of Imaging Sciences
Timothy Baran received his Ph.D. in Optics in 2013, and is currently an Instructor in the Department of Imaging Sciences. His research focuses on optical spectroscopy and modelling of light propagation in tissue for photodynamic therapy.
